Attention Landlords and Students

Please be aware that we have received several reports that individuals have been contacting students and landlords in our area with a potential scam.

Recent reports have targeted Students wanting to sublet for the summer months. The most recent notices received in our area are including information that the person is from Manchester, England and Africa and will need to secure an accommodation to study overseas – although it is important to note that the message changes frequently.

Known as "Cheque Overpayment Fraud" the scam works in this way:

An individual will often send an email or contact you to indicate they are interested in renting an accommodation.
You are asked to provide details such as the deposit amount required to rent the accommodation and the mailing address to mail you the cheque.
You then might receive a cheque for a larger amount than you have requested.
You will then be asked to return the excess funds back.
The hope is that you will return the funds before you find out that the cheque you received is counterfeit.
